Watershed is a cross-artform venue and producer, sharing, developing and showcasing exemplary cultural ideas and talent. They are based in Bristol, but place no boundaries on their desire to connect with artists and audiences in the wider world. It is also a thoroughly marvellous cinema and the cafe does a rather splendid lamb burger deluxe. That's 'deluxe'!

We worked closely with Document on this project and also David and Louise from the Watershed and we all formulated (many) ideas on just what was needed for the new site. There was previously an excellent website for the Watershed but it had past it's sell by date somewhat and did not truly reflect the dynamic and varied nature of what goes on.

So where do we start with the design for this one... To quote the UK Creative Economy Programme, 'Watershed is more than just an arts cinema. It is at once a cultural centre... a research and innovation facility, a café/bar, and a cultural tourist attraction.' So it is many things to many people. Ding! (Lightbulb going on) Ah ha. Overlaps. The Watershed is not just 'one thing' it is many 'things'.

Using a lot of negative space, a lot of colour and large bold overlapping blocks and headings we wanted to create a real feeling of enthusiasm and energy. It was a conscious decision to try and push the design away from the norm and do something unlike anything else, to make a feature of the space and let the content breathe. For that is what the Watershed is really good at, it showcases original and exciting thoughts and ideas and as a platform it develops and nurtures. It let's 'stuff' breathe.

With many passionate people, both externally and internally, involved with Watershed, we needed a design team who could match this passion and bring their own enthusiasm to help deliver something distinctive. Graeme brought invaluable experience and an inherent design confidence that helped our stakeholders believe in the new design from very early on, and he delivered in a wholly inclusive and collaborative way. We are very proud of our new site and believe it truly expresses the wide range of cultural ideas, values and energy that make Watershed unique.

We all worked on the designs for this site for many a month and it had to be 'just right', the build was handled in-house at the Watershed and they have done a terrific job. It was great to see the designs coming to shape and the pages coming to life as the project ticked along... As a piece of work we're extremely proud of it and have generously recieved a kind word or two so thanks to all who were involved in the project.
