Station to Station Reissue

For more than a century EMI has been responsible for some of the greatest music ever released and when they contacted us about developing a HTML5 site for the reissue of David Bowie’s seminal album ‘Station to Station’ we jumped at the chance.
Musically, Station to Station was a transitional album for Bowie, developing the funk and soul music of his previous release, Young Americans, while presenting a new direction towards synthesizers and motorik rhythms that was influenced by German electronic bands such as Kraftwerk and Neu. Bowie himself has said that Station to Station was "a plea to come back to Europe for me".
The website design stays true to the original album artwork which features a black and white still taken from Nicolas Roeg's fantastic 'The Man Who Fell to Earth'. To keep the whole 'look' consistent with the artwork and to make use of modern web technologies we were given permission to use the Standard CT font as a webfont from the foundry Castle Type, thanks. We also worked closely with Mark at Tap Labs on the intro video using assets from the deluxe edition.
This project used some interesting techniques. We've used HTML5 video for the first time for the intro section, the Google translate API service for multi-lingual support and, (brace yourselves) image maps mixed with a large dose of jQuery to create the interactive box set.
... simultaneously one of Bowie's most accessible albums and his most impenetrable.

Station to Station is a milestone Bowie album, an album that we here at EVIL are big fans of, so to work on the website was a privilege.
